Why "Normal" Isn’t Enough: Optimizing Your Vitamin D Levels for Long-Term Health

When was the last time you looked at your routine blood work and paid attention to your Vitamin D levels? If you live in the Midwest or regions where the sun hides away for months at a time, your levels might be telling a story you aren't expecting.


Dr. Roger Spahr of the Hormone Balance Center recently sat down to break down the science of Vitamin D—exploring why standard lab ranges fall short, how geography and sunscreen impact your absorption, and what numbers you should actually be aiming for to protect your long-term health.



The Geography Problem: Why Midwest Sun Isn't Enough


If you live in areas like Indiana, Illinois, or Michigan, getting natural Vitamin D from the sun is a seasonal battle.


After August, the sun sits at a lower angle in the sky. By the time late autumn and winter roll around, the angle of the sun rays passing through the atmosphere isn't quite enough for ultraviolet light to properly hit your skin and convert into Vitamin D.


Adding to that is our reliance on sunscreen. While sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from UV damage when you first go outside, it simultaneously blocks the exact UV rays your body needs to synthesize Vitamin D.


Avoiding Deficiencies vs. True Biochemical Optimization


Most standard medical charts evaluate Vitamin D based on preventing severe deficiency diseases, like rickets. Lab tests typically flag anything under 20 as a significant risk for bone issues, meaning most people are told they are "fine" just by crossing that bare minimum threshold.


However, Dr. Spahr emphasizes that avoiding disease is not the same thing as optimizing your health.


Clinical data shows that maintaining higher serum levels plays a massive role in preventing chronic, serious illnesses:

  • Breast Cancer: Maintaining levels between 30 and the low 50s helps significantly in prevention.

  • Colon Cancer: Optimal ranges span from the 30s up to the mid-40s.

  • Diabetes: Prevention strategies perform much better when levels reach into the 50s.

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Higher levels in the upper 40s and beyond show dramatic reductions (over 50%) in risk.

  • Heart Health: Men see up to a 50% reduction in heart attack risk when Vitamin D levels reach the mid-30s and above.


What Should Your Target Level Actually Be?


At the Hormone Balance Center, the focus isn't just on standard reference ranges—it's on optimal biochemistry.


While a bare minimum baseline of 30 to 40 is acceptable, Dr. Spahr recommends pushing your levels higher:

  • The Target: Aim for a baseline of at least 45, with an optimal target range between 55 and 60 (and for some individuals, all the way up to 80).

  • The Dosage: To bridge the gap, many adults find that a daily intake of around 5,000 units of Vitamin D is necessary to bring their blood levels into that optimal zone.

  • The Hormone Connection: Beyond bone density and cancer prevention, optimal Vitamin D plays a critical role in how your body handles and regulates your hormones.
